Wild fishing, wild swimming, wilderness campingUnique ways to enjoy the great outdoors are on our doorstepSwimBetween the Lake Distirct and the Yorkshire Dales we have some of Britain's best wild swimming on our doorstep. From the beaches of the Lakes to the limestone gorges of the Dales, you can swim, kayak, plunge, dive or just paddle without worrying about sand in your sandwiches, salt encrusted trunks, tatty shops and parking problems or your parasol blowing away in the wind (most wild swimming places have plenty of natural shade). Our family mission this summer is to find as many wild swimming spots as we can and share them here (unless they are so good and secret that we want to keep them to ourselves). As a first step check this link for outdoor swimming in rivers, lakes and waterfalls, secret beaches and coves. FishThere can be nothing more relaxing or close to nature than whiling the day away on a river bank fishing. There can also be nothing further from that than having to compete for a spot (and a catch) with dozens of other anglers. Our local river, the Eden, widely regarded as the North's best for Salmon and Trout, has some of the best wild fishing - quiet stretches of the main river and its tributaries, where it'll be just you and the wild river. GoWild fisihng on the Eden is a scheme giving exclusive access to 28 private beats throughout the Eden Valley. Check this link for the best fishing in the north of England.
CampIf you are going to spend a night under canvass do you want just the stars and the curlews for company as you drift to sleep by the light of the dying embers of a makeshift fire or would you rather toss and turn to the beat of next door's music, troubled by the faint smell of bottled gas, with only the prospect of a trudge to the grubby shower block next morning to look forward to. If it's the former, check this link to get closer to the real great outdoors and check out some of the wild camping forums and blogsites for tips of where to go. Unfortunately, the current law makes wild camping a little tricky, although in the Lake District it is a generally tolerated activity.
