Food & Drink: Eating & Drinking Together
Honest, imaginative, locally sourced & seasonal cooking
As with all good country houses, the Dining Room is at the heart of the castle and many a new friendship has been made around the castle's oak dining table.
We don't pretend to offer a fine dining experience: there are plenty of places throughout the nearby Yorkshire Dales and Lake District for that, rather the sort of food you'd probably like to cook at home if you had the time.
"Delicious breakfasts served on vintage Emma Bridgewater china, sublime suppers and dinners on Royal Doulton, all under a gilded vaulted ceiling.
It's quintessentially English and almost
too good to be true"
Augill Guest Book October 2008

There is absolutely no need to ruin a lazy Sunday (or any other) morning here. Breakfast is a leisurely affair, seldom kicking off before 9am. Ingredients are locally sourced and include locally handmade Cumberland sausages & award-winning bacon, wild salmon smoked at Brougham Hall, free-range eggs from the castle’s resident hens, freshly baked bread, home made preserves and freshly squeezed juice (which, of course, is what the pair on the left are drinking). |
Later in the day, we offer informal two-course dinners by arrangement (please see below) - additional courses are often available and there is always an early supper for younger guests when we are cooking dinner.
There's no whispering over the consomme here. Dinner is a thoroughly sociable occasion with everyone eating the same daily set menu together at the same time around one table.
In summer, weather permitting, dining can even spill out into the garden and impromptu barbecues, while rare, are not unknown.
All the castle’s meals are simply prepared from the finest ingredients sourced from our own garden and England’s northern counties, often organic but always from producers who recognize the importance of quality over quantity. Our menus are set according to the preferences of each night's guests so there is no waste.
There is a modest well balanced, wine list and you can try your bartending skills at the honesty bar in the library. There's even a basket of left behind spectacles if, as the evening wears on, you find it increasingly difficult to see what you're pouring or writing down in the honesty book!
Please remember that we are not a full service hotel, that evening meals rely solely on either Wendy or Simon and so are not a permanent feature of our offer. Accordingly, plans and our family circumstances sometimes change. When we are not able to offer evening meals you'll either be told when you book or have plenty
of notice on the rare occasions that we have to cancel a booked evening meal. In any event we have some great recommendations of places to eat locally.
**We will not be offering evening meals from August 1 - 12 inclusive**
